The new Wellness Skills Program offers a series of workshops and brief structured groups designed to help students enhance wellness and develop personal, academic and social skills. To sign up for a group, or for more information, call SPS at (310) 825-0768 or visit us at John Wooden Center West.

SPRING 2008 WELLNESS SKILLS GROUPS

ART OF RELAXATION
For students who want to learn and practice several methods of relaxation, find ways to become calmer during stressful situations and integrate relaxation into daily life.
Thursday, 3:00-4:00pm, Three Sessions

BIOFEEDBACK TRAINING
Participants will be introduced to and practice biofeedback, a process of becoming aware of the physiological indicators of stress and learning how to restore inner calm. This group features heart-rate variability feedback, the latest innovation in biofeedback. Heart-rate variability feedback has been shown to be effective in reducing stress and improving intellectual, emotional and physical functioning. Participants will gain access to our new biofeedback laboratory and eventually be able to check out portable equipment.

COGNITIVE THERAPY FOR INSOMNIA
Sleep – it’s essential to your health! CBT is a proven non-drug treatment for insomnia. This five-week group will help teach you strategies to improve the quality and efficiency of your sleep. Learn new habits and ways of thinking that not only improve sleep but reduce stress.
Tuesdays, 3:00-4:30pm, Five Sessions

INTRODUCTION TO MINDFULNESS
This group is for people who would like to learn basic principles of mindfulness. Mindfulness techniques can be used to help live more in the present moment, reduce stress and improve overall quality of life.

MANAGING STRESS
The amount of stress a person experiences is often related to how he or she interprets events, not just the events themselves. This group will focus on identifying beliefs and self-talk that may intensify stress responses and on replacing them with more realistic and constructive way of thinking.

MANAGING EXCESSIVE WORRY
Do you feel like you spend too much of your time worrying? If so, this group is for you! This is a four-session group designed to help people who experience excessive worrying that can be difficult to manage. In this group we will differentiate between productive and unproductive worry, help participants better understand reasons why they worry, and teach strategies to manage and overcome excessive worry.

REDUCING PUBLIC SPEAKING ANXIETY
This group is for students wanting to be more comfortable speaking in a variety of circumstances, such as raising a hand in class, answering questions in front of other, participating in class discussions, making presentations, and approaching professors. Specific cognitive and behavioral techniques for reducing public speaking anxiety will be presented.
